Friday Feb 5
We took a lay-day as Ernst and Hilde (our friends from Toronto) arrived today. It was a good day for a break as it was pouring rain in the village but blizzarding on top - many lifts were closed due to high winds.
E&H had flown to Vancouver on Thursday, staying overnight at the Fairmont in the city then took the bus to Whistler arriving around 11:30am. We caught up and had a nice lunch at the Mallard. Then we all went grocery shopping - walked to the IGA in the pouring rain - arrived totally soaked in spite of having umbrellas. Dieter re-discovered that his hiking boots are no longer water-proof - should have bought a new pair like I recommended.
From the IGA we tired in vain to get a taxi so took the bus home - Dieter and Ernst only went as far as the bus interchange so they could stop at the Dub Linh while Hilde and I continued home with the groceries.
Around 7pm we took a taxi (as it was still raining) to Araxi for a great dinner - duck for the guys and seafood for Hilde and I. Home to bed.
Saturday Feb 6
We awoke to find the rain had turing to snow even in the village - there had been 60cm of new snow on top - conditions described as “powder” - amazing - image if the rain on the lower mountain had also been snow.
E&H come to our place for breakfast (they only has a studio in the Glacier Lodge across the street) - we had our usual repast of fruit salad and cereal. It was an amazing day - fantastic conditions (60cm new now on top) and sun sun sun - however, the lines were also amazing. It took us 1h20m to reach the top of the Solar Coaster - Hilde had planned to take the Village Gondola then Peak 2 Peak to meet us at Christine’s for lunch - she had to forget this idea when the gondola broke down for several hours. She had lunch on her own on the terrace at Milestones while the rest of f us (D&P&E) had a nice lunch at Christine’s. After lunch we skied down the Easy Out to Whistler village and met Hilde at the Dubh Lin for Apres Ski. We had dinner at our place - steak etc.
Sunday Feb 7
It was another fabulous day - Ernst decided to take the day off to rest his legs so D&I hit the mountain with a vengeance - hotdogging down quite a few runs on Backcomb before meeting E&H for a late lunch at the Mallard. It was Super-bowl afternoon (not that we cared one way or the other). Later we all had pre-dinner drinks at our place before going to Il Caminetto for dinner - we all agreed we preferred the food at Araxi.
Monday Feb 8
Last day for the Beckers - we skiers did a few runs then met Hilde for lunch at Christine’s. It was a warm and sunny day and the conditions were still pretty good - somewhat slushy but pretty skiable. We all took the Peak 2 Peak back to Whistler where E&H took the gondola home and D&I skied down Tokum. We met back our place where E&I changed for their trip back to Toronto - the redeye - I did not envy them at all. We bid them a fond farewell at 4pm. We relaxed and had bacon and eggs for dinner then off to bed very early.
