The Middle

Monday March 2

A wonderful sunny day - but not spring conditions; it was quite cold on top -6C and blowing a gale. We skied down to mid-station on the Whistler gondola and tried the new cabins back to the top where we took the P-2-P back to Blackcomb and skied all the way to the bottom on the only run which they have been able to keep open from the top of the Wizard - it was actually a pretty good run.

We stayed home for dinner of mushroom pasta and salad - a bit of reading then off to bed early.

Tuesday March 3

Another wonderful sunny day and the wind had abated. We had a great day on the mountain, all things considered. Dieter tried some demo skis and decided he really needed new skis - rent for the rest of this trip then consider his options - i.e. buy new or continue renting in future.

After another excellent lunch at Christine’s we skied a few more runs so Dieter could test another pair of demo skis (he tried Voekl and Kaestle).

He decided that he really must get new skis - either renting or buying. He checked out renting after we finished skiing for the day and found out that 10 days of rentals would be $300 (if booked 3 months in advance this would be $200) but they offered to sell him a pair of K2’s ex-demos for $300. At this stage he is thinking over these alternatives.

As pre-booked we had dinner at Araxi - a 10 out of 10 - Dieter had rabbit and I had wild Alaskan scallops for mains - for entrees Dieter had carpaccio and I had tuna tatiki.

Wednesday March 4

It was another amazing sunny day - even warmer than the previous day. After thinking it over Dieter decided to rent the K2 ex-demos for the day to see if he liked them. Given that a single day rental is $50 - there was a strong incentive to ‘like’ and buy these for $300 as the $50 is applied against the purchase.

We skied on Blackcomb and Whistler which was really not as good condition-wise as Blackcomb. We decided to ski through and go home for a late lunch (bacon & eggs) - which we did. We went out shopping in the afternoon - looking for new ski pants for Dieter but when he finally found some to try on he decided his leg was bothering him so much he’s need come back another time. We stayed home for dinner - rack of lamb.

Thursday March 5

It was a cloudy but again a mild day - we considered taking a layday but decided on ‘one run’ just to test out the conditions. Well - imagine to our delight when the conditions were the best ever - so far this season. We skied a lot then again went home for lunch - a repeat of the previous day (bacon & eggs). After lunch we went grocery shopping and returned just as the cleaners were upon us so we went to the Mallard Bar for fives’es then back home. I got on the phone to US Air to try and book our 2016 skiing but alas after nearly 2 hours on hold I gave up. It was so late by this stage we just had sambos for dinner.

Friday March 6

It was another cloudy day - even milder than Thursday - already above zero at the top of the mountain. I again got on the phone to US Air (UK office) and put part of our 2016 ski trip on hold (SYD-NRT-YVR on Jan 26 then a dummy return of YVR-NRT - still need to finalise and ticket - all sorts of issues with availability are driving me nuts. We decided to give it a try and found conditions pretty excellent all things considered - The sun even made an appearance around 11:30am. After lunch at Christine’s we skied home. We hit the hot tub in the latter part of the afternoon then showered and stayed home for a pasta dinner. I managed to ticket our OW tickets for our 2016 ski trip - with ‘dummy’ return dates - we plan to spend 3 weeks in Whistler then one week in Niseko Japan.

Saturday March 7

So we got up to an amazing sunny - the forecast is pretty much the same for the rest of our stay - one day has showers forecast but certainly no snow - looks like spring is here to stay. We skied in the morning then went down for a late lunch at the Mallard - sat outside in the wonderful sunny warm weather. We stayed home for dinner of pasta.
