Tuesday June 20
So off to Nuremberg today on the 10:04am train from the Hbf - we left the hotel quite early as we had to catch the S-bahn to the Hbf - there was a lot of confusion on our train. They had combined two trains and our train number did not have our car number - it never got sorted out but we managed to get seats with some assistance from fellow passengers. At one stage the train stopped for 20+ minutes due to a weather event?? !!
We finally arrived at the Melter Hotel in the old town about 2pm - we could check-in right away after a very friendly welcome. Our room was really a large studio apartment with a kitchenette and to our surprise there was a full (shared) laundry. We went to the local supermarket (just a few minutes walk away) to stock up on breakfast goodies (berries and yoghurt) and cold cuts, cheese and bread for a light dinner at home.
We then headed out for a wonder around the old town and a welcome drink at a canal-side pub - which was very refreshing as it was nearly 30C
After our dinner at home - we had another wander around the old town and shared an ice cream from one of the many shops serving ice cream.
Wednesday June 21
As seen from the above snapshot is was to be a hot and possibly stormy couple of days.
We spent the morning visiting various sites in the old town - including the fortress (Kaiserburg) and the house of the famous German painter, Albrect Duerer) stoppnig for lunch at an outdoor bistro. After a rest we walked around the town some more checking out various restaurants and doing a bit of grocery shopping.
After failing to get a reservation at our restaurant of choice the front deck clerk recommended an Italian place just around the corner - it turned out to be pretty good.
Thursday June 22
We decided to do a day trip (by train) to Bamberg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a quintessential German medieval town in Upper Franconia, Bavaria, about 30 minutes away by train. We walked around stopping at a canal-side restaurant, Henrii, for an excellent lunch. After wandering around the major sites we headed back to the train station for our 2:17pm train back to Nuremberg - the train pulled into the station on time but then sat there for 25 minutes for reasons which were not clear - anyway off we went for the 35 minute trip home.
Back at our hotel we had a rest as we were zapped by the 30C temps. We went to a local restaurant (highly recommended on Trip Advisor) for a most disappointing meal - we should have left when we placed our drinks order to be told there was no ice - the restaurant was not air conditioned and it was still 30C outside. My Kase Spatezle was a disgrace to German food.
Friday June 23
Up early and off to Stuttgart by train.
