Kings Canyon

Saturday October 31 - Halloween and Qld election day

We packed up our apartment at the Quest and drove to King’s Canyon arriving around 2pm just when our room became available. It was an 5+ hour easy drive - we saw more wild camels and wild horses than cars. We only passed one mega raod train coming in the opposite direction. Our deluxe spa suite was fine - not luxurious. We woofed down our packed sambos with a cold beer and G&T then settled in.

The resort’s restaurant and pool were closed (due to Covid and/or lack of customers) - the tennis court was in disrepair not that we wanted to play tennis in 35℃ heat. We checked out the bar and bistro then rested until dinner. Dinner was at the bar as even the dining area in the bistro was closed - it was quite busy as many people were there to watch the Bledislow cup - the KiWi’s clobbered the Aussies - the food was, well, pub food. Off to bed.

Oh yes, and Anna won in a landslide - so the QLD border will stay closed to NSW and VIC.

Sunday November 1

We got up at 5:30am - and set out for the King’s Canyon rim walk - the headline walk in the area. We started the climb up (initial steep ascent) at 6:15am - and without really pressing it were finished by 9am. (The walk is closed to new starters at 9am due to the heat). It was already hot. We went back to the hotel and had our fruit salad for brekkie then rested after the very tiring walk. Around noon we went to the shop and got 2 takeaway toasties (part of the included, collect yourself, brekkie) - the toasties were about 1 out of 10 - only beacuse I had some leftover avocado which we added.

Later in the afternoon we drove 20k’s to Kathleen Springs for a shortish easy walk - not that any walk is easy when it’s 39℃ but it was something to do.

Happy hour and dinner was a repeat of the previous night - but lots less people. A group of station hands from King’s Creek Station were in the pub playing pool - so Dieter got to talking to them for a bit. We found out they raise a few camels mainly for tourism.
